Rhino Ratsnakes or Vietnamese Longnose Ratsnakes are simply the best! Our personal favorite species, these unsual, sexually dimorphic (both size and color) snakes occur naturally in the temperate rainforests of mountainous northern Vietnam and southern China. Since 1994 (when the species was looked into again seriously by science for the first time since the species description in 1897, and another in 1931) all animals from this species have been descended from the same group of wild caught adults maintained in Russia. Offspring from those adults went on to be founder stock of collections in Germany and multiple US collections, and make up the stock of nearly all private captive collections. Since 2006, we have offered unrelated hatchlings from a new lineage; the fear of inbreeding is no longer a concern with this species when selectively bred. Keep these relatively cool (68 - 84 degrees), and watch them take off in your collection. They are not nearly as sensitive to climatic conditions as most other asian ratsnakes. Hatchling pair prices have stayed consistent over the years, but lone males are consistently available at extremely reasonable prices for those keepers wanting to try their hand with the species without a huge investment. All the babies we sell are well started and feed on pinkie mice without hesitation. We consistently get asked about our method for starting them (either from successful breeders of the species trying their hand at raising babies for the first time or individuals who have purchased non-feeding babies elsewhere), and Tom has created a caresheet that details our feeding technique, which is available here.
Like most other species we offer, these tend to be seasonal, with most hatching occuring in July or August, and availability beginning between October and December. We also have access to captive hatched babies from the Yunan Province of China and captive bred babies from Russia; the former are usually available in spring as early as June, while the latter tend to slightly precede our production, becoming available between late August and October. Email us to get on our notification list to hear about our available stock and anticipated offspring.
